Silver ruble of Nicholas I

1 ruble 1842 and mintsmeister signs

Historical periods in the minting of Russian coins of the tsarist era are usually classified by the years of the head of state's rule. There is a reason for this, since it is the reigning Emperor who is depicted on coins of large denominations from 1 ruble and higher, and it is he - or she in the case of the Empress - who is the last authority when deciding whether to launch a trial copy of the coin in circulation or not.

But the head of state cannot go into detail in the process of preparing the design of the coin, not the Emperor controls the operation of the engraver Braque unsuccessful designs, it only evaluates the finished work, completed, and submitted for higher approval by the person, controlling all the nuances of the coinage – mintmaster mint.

Of 6 mints, who worked in the reign of Nicholas I, St. Petersburg mint was exemplary: he was technically better than the other, it was there in 1840 appeared first coin press the lever system Ulgorn and therefore in the capital were minted Russian coins made of precious metals.
During the 30 years of the reign of Nicholas I, 7 mintsmeisters were replaced At the Saint Petersburg mint: Pavel Danilov (1820-1838), Nikolai Grachev (1825-1841), Alexey Chadov (1839-1843), Konstantin Butenev (1844-1845), Alexander Gert (1846-1857), Pavel Alekseev (1846-1852), and Nikolai Iossa (1848, 1852-1855).

These people were not only assigned the duty to monitor compliance with the technology of minting coins made of platinum, gold and silver, they were assigned the historically established right to put their initials on coins minted under their control.

Ruble 1842, occupies a special place among the Nikolaev rubles - it so happened that in the collections of numismatists are 3 version of this silver dollar with the initials of mintmaster Alexei Chadova - 'AH' and Nikolai Grachev - 'NG' and the abbreviation 'MW' Warsaw mint (Mennica Warszawska).

AH

Silver ruble 898 samples weighing 20.73 g. in diameter 35.5 mm, minted in 1842 at the St. Petersburg mint with a circulation of 4 965 000 PCs., by its design belongs to the 'eagle with outstretched wings'type.
According to the classification of V. V. Uzdennikov, this is the 4th type of the Small state emblem of Russia: on the wings of the eagle in addition to the Moscow coat of arms appeared even 6 coats of arms of the Kingdom of Kazan, the Kingdom of Astrakhan, of the Siberian Empire, Kingdom of Poland, Kingdom of Tauric Chersonesos and the Grand Duchy of Finland.
In 1842, the mintsmeister of the St. Petersburg mint was Alexey Chadov, who owned the right to put his initials on the silver ruble with the eagle's paws - 'ACH'.

NG

NG – these are the initials of the mintsmeister Nikolai Grachev, who worked at the mint of St. Petersburg for 16 years from 1825 to 1841, but in 1842 was no longer such and to the official circulation of 4,965,000 pieces. I didn't have a relationship. Ruble 1842 with the initials ' NG ' - this is a new model. For what reason the obverse stamp with the initials of Nikolai Grachev was chosen for the minting of the new – made ruble this year, one can only guess-whether it was better preserved than the original one, or whether it was more accessible for this kind of activity.

MW

The Ruble of 1842 for the needs of the Kingdom of Poland was minted not in St. Petersburg, but directly at the Warsaw mint. The circulation was only 257,366 pieces.
In the short history of the Warsaw mint, only 4 mintsmeister put their initials on the coins-Jacob Benik (1816-1827), friederik Gunger (1827-1832), Karol Gronau (1830-1834) and Jerzy push (1834-1835).

I Venture to assume that after the suppression of the Polish uprising of 1830 -1831, and most importantly-in connection with the beginning of the national monetary reform in 1839, E. F. Kankrin initials of mintsmeister with Polish surnames began to look like they did not correspond to the spirit of the time and were replaced with a neutral ' MW ' - Mennica Warszawska.
I have in my collection - 1 RUBLE 1842 St. PETERSBURG-ACH: scratches and scuffs, it did not escape, but its recognition and identity preserved.
