The bank began issuing its own banknotes in the 1860s-despite the fact that initially the Hong Kong Treasury did not consider these banknotes as legal tender and did not accept taxes in them. In 1935, the country adopted a law – ' Currency Ordinance of 1935”, according to which banknotes of 5 local banks with a face value of $ 5 and higher acquired the status of legal tender. This includes HSBC.
