Money for a red envelope for Chinese New Year

10 dollars 1986, Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation

Banknotes are issued not only by central banks: in the UK, the right to issue their own banknotes is granted to 7 private banks, in the former British colony of Hong Kong-to 3 private banks.
One such bank is HSBC-Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
The bank began issuing its own banknotes in the 1860s-despite the fact that initially the Hong Kong Treasury did not consider these banknotes as legal tender and did not accept taxes in them. But business willingly used these banknotes for BTB payments, and private individuals did not refuse to accept this money from a private issuer.
In 1935, the country adopted a law – ' Currency Ordinance of 1935”, according to which banknotes of 5 local banks with a face value of $ 5 and higher acquired the status of legal tender. This includes HSBC.
Take a look at the $ 10 HSBC note dated January 1, 1986 – what is it remarkable for?
The text is minimal: the English culture of design of banknotes affects: 'Promise to pay to the bearer on demand at its Office here ten dollars'
What is depicted on the banknote?
On the front side – a variant of the coat of arms of Hong Kong in the status of an English colony, in the lower left corner-the emblem of HSBC.
On the back is a sculpture of lions guarding the bank's headquarters-a tribute to the traditions of HSBC, they are still present on all the bank's banknotes. It is noteworthy that these lions have their own 'folk names'-'Stitt' and 'Stephen', in honor of the chief managers of HSBC named Gordon Stitt and Alexander Stephen, who led the bank in the distant 1920s and 1930s.
The banknote was printed by the English company Thomas De La Rue and Company Limited.
It is this banknote that the locals loved more than other denominations – what is the reason?
On the eve of the Chinese New Year, local residents traditionally make gifts to each other – banknotes that are placed in a festive red envelope called “lai see”.
The bills should be selected in the same denomination – so that the recipient can estimate the amount of the offering by touch, that is, by the thickness of the envelope, without opening it at the time of receipt.
The $ 10 bill was perfect for lai see – that's why on New Year's Eve, the bank branches lined up to receive brand-new ten-dollar bills.
My bill ED 866528 is not pressed: perhaps it managed to bring joy to someone on the Chinese New Year...
In general, Chinese bankers usually believe in the mystical nature of the denomination of the bill: so in 2015, in connection with the 150th anniversary of the bank's formation, HSBC issued a commemorative banknote of 150 Hong Kong dollars-to extend the life of the bank for at least another 150 years.
