Moscow, December 1947

This post is an illustration of what Muscovites – and all citizens of the USSR-managed to avoid on the eve of the New Year of 1948 when preparing their festive table.
The Great Patriotic War ended 2.5 years ago, and the country still continued to operate a card system for the distribution of food products, including bread.
'Bread card with coupons from December 16 to December 31, 1947' is an example of this.
A narrow strip of paper with small coupons, which were not torn off, but carefully cut off with scissors.
How much bread could 1 working Muscovite buy in 1947?
As it is written on the top of the front side of the card, 'the norm is 550 g per day', which were decomposed into the following components (in grams):
  • HUNDRED - rye. bread;
  • 200 - rye. bread;
  • HUNDRED - wheat. bread;
  • 150 - wheat. bread.
For some reason, one hundred grams is written in letters-ONE HUNDRED, and not in numbers – 100.
With difficulty, but you can see the inscription on the perimeter of the round seal: 'M.... about the River f ...' - probably this is the 'Ministry of the River Fleet'. It must be assumed that the card was supposed to be issued at the place of work to a person related to the River Fleet of Moscow.
Where could I buy this card?
On the back is a rectangular stamp - Sokolnicheskaya k-ra MOSHLEBTORG, Bakery, 37-503-probably the number of the store.
The card has the serial number P-02 and a warning for those who are prone to losing their vigilance: 'If lost, the card will not be renewed.'
There is also a field for recording the Full name: it is not filled in.
It was not filled in by chance: on December 14, 1947, the Resolution of the Council of Ministers of the USSR and the Central Committee of the CPSU (b) 'On the implementation of monetary reform and the abolition of cards for food and industrial goods' was published.
Taking into account the fact that, in accordance with the Decree, it was also necessary to exchange old money for new money and at the same time meet the deadline from December 16 to 22, 1947, the coming 1948 citizens of the USSR met on the run in shops and savings banks, getting used to new money and an expanded product range.
